Race to Read

The students in grades K-2 need 8 Hot Dots Power Pens and the Complete Hot Dots Phonics Program.

I am the Reading Specialist at an urban elementary school. 98% of our students are not only on the free lunch program but the free breakfast program. Many of our students enter school with little to no concept of language arts.

Our district has set a reading goal of 85% mastery at a district level and a 90% mastery on the state level. We have adapted a basal series that allows students to rotate around stations while the teacher works with a small group. It is great for the much needed social interactions our students need due to the violence and drugs that surround the community. However a teacher can't hear when Johnny tells everyone in his group that m is a n and makes a /k/ sound. Since Johnny is the aggressive young man everyone believes him, and we are back at square one.

The hot dot kits with the talking pens will offer the students the guide that they need to master our district goals while independently working with a buddy at their station. More importantly the talking pen will confirm the instruction given by the teacher.

In order to read at the level that our district expects our students need your support. Unfortunately even the most dedicated teacher can't be in two places at once. These kits will allow the students to engage in the task of building strong phonics that are needed to acquire the level of reading the district expects. They will become independent and motivated to learn to read.
