A productive dim of a murmur; the sound of a well-oiled machine; the whisper of a disk drive humming fill all quadrants of the chamber of learning. This room is alive with the sights and sounds of thoughts being thought, words being spoken, rhymes woven into sonnets. Welcome to Spanish IV in Maine! This idyllic class, as if from dreams come true, is Spanish IV at my high school. More than may ever be imagined, young minds are being formed to face the demands of an unimaginable future. These young women and men require every tool available to live well and to contribute to humanity. Were there a flaw in paradise, it may have been the lack of diversity. Such limits the ability to interact in conversational tones with other Spanish speakers in real life situations. Digital voice recorders would allow relatively isolated learners to save to memory extemporaneous statements which may be critiqued and tweaked. This would maximize student output, met with teacher input. The interaction of the two, student output and teacher input, minimizes the time limitations of all too short class periods. Digital voice recorders allow students to perform spontaneously in their own context. Such technology allows for teacher review at the point of submission. Your help with acquiring these voice recorders will add a whole new dimension to the breadth and depth of students’ Spanish ability. This will give students the tools that they need to transition from Maine high school students to citizens of the world.
