"Hello, I teach music magnet to students in grades three through five. Students from all over my county audition to be able to participate in the music magnet program where they learn string instruments, steel drums, mandolins, choir, music theory, music history and music appreciation. Many of my students come to my program because they are very talented young children whose parents cannot afford to provide their children with private lessons or musical instruction.

Currently, our district is facing many cuts in the budget. Music magnet has been one of the many areas that has lost significant amounts of funds over the school year. In an effort to continue to provide my students with outstanding music education experiences I have begun looking to grants and generous donors for their support in keeping our program alive and successful

The 1867 anthology of Slave Songs in the United States is a collection of 130 songs that were sung by slaves in our country. In my music magnet program I use music as a tool for teaching students about everything that I can. It is so essential that our children understand the fight this country went through, and is still going through, for equal rights and treatment of all people in our country. I feel that through teaching my students these slave songs, as well as the history behind the songs, my students will better understand and appreciate the country we are today as well as see how music is interwoven in all parts of culture.

Your generous donation will help me to keep my students engaged and exposed to the very highest quality of music educational while at the same time reinforcing their reading skills and introducing them to African American music history. My students are so motivated to learn about music. Music seems to be their driving force, so as often as I can, I use their love and enthusiasm in music to introduce them to new thoughts and ideas to not only improve their academic skills, but to build their cultural capital.
