Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade science in a high-need community. About a fourth of my students are in special education and another fourth are english-language leaners (ELL).

Living environment and biology is a big focus in the 6th grade science curriculum. Most of the supplies we have are very text-based. We don't have materials to supplement the curriculum that would give my students opportunities to explore biology through hands-on activities and experiments. My students, especially those who are in special education and those who are ELLs, are very hands-on learners and they have expressed strong interests in doing hands-on activities in the classroom. I believe the best way for them to learn about biology is by bringing "life" and "nature" into the classroom.

The resources I have requested, such as the owl pellets and the frog dissection kits, would allow my students to better understand living organisms and their interactions with the environment. The butterfly kits and the terrariums would give my students an opportunity to become animal and plant care-takers, which teaches them not only biology and ecology, but also responsibility and scientific skills.

Your help will ensure that my students get the most out of the living environment units through engaging and hands-on activities. It will capture their attention, hone their scientific skills, and give them an opportunity to become ecologists, zoologists, and biologists.
