It Takes More Than Ears To Listen

My students need 30 copies of the book A Loss of Words: The Story of Deafness in a Family.

Those who have ears to hear do not always listen. I have eleventh grade high school students who quite often think the world is one picture and those who do not fit the picture are less worthy, less "normal," less desirable. While learning American culture through literature in my junior English classroom, the students also need to learn American culture through lives outside their zone of experience. Without exposure to others outside their narrow world, how can they invite all in? And those who live in blocked off worlds need to discover they are not alone.

One world that lives within the world of my school is a small population of deaf students. Of course we have interpreters in some of our classrooms. Of course the teachers try to facilitate a learning environment for all, but the other students, the peers of the deaf students need to open their ears and hearts to listen and learn. In addition, the deaf students need to know we are listening to them.

As I listened to National Public Radio one day, I heard this book about deafness in a family. The daughter was hearing and she struggled with her parents' deafness. Life is not always pretty. The students need the book to help them to walk in the shoes of another life and learn the lessons there. The knowledge and empathy gained will perhaps help the students on the road that they will have to walk. I admire Huckleberry Finn and his odyssey, but it was only fiction.

Your help in purchasing these books will help my students discover a world that is normally outside their level of experience. The opportunity to read and study this book of true life examples of endurance and tenacity and then connect these challenges to their own lives would be an amazing gift to this generation. Who knows how far-lasting the influence would be!
