In order to complete a "Book Walk", my students will need 45 non-fiction (research) books about a variety of topics from the ancient civilizations and modern day civilizations of the Eastern Hemisphere. These include the civilizations of the Early Man era, Egypt, The Middle East, Greece, Rome, Asia, India, Middle Ages Time Period, Africa and India.
My students love to "WALK" through books. I am a sixth grade CORE teacher in NY. I teach a combination of English and Social Studies to my students. Although the area in which we come from is a typical middle class, there are many obstacles my students face in these hard economic times. And unfortunately, being part of the New York City School System, our school is NOT rewarded much funding as a middle class environment.
My students enjoy the methodology of teaching themselves. They appreciate the idea of opening a book and exploring different facts and ideas for themselves. I would love to guide them in the process of learning our sixth grade social studies curriculum of Ancient Civilizations, doing just that...teaching themselves! However, there is not enough resource books in our classroom library to accomplish this goal.
I would greatly appreciate if donors would supply our classroom with the necessary tools to allow my students the opportunity to teach themselves. I would need a tremendous amount of research books about the ancient civilization and the modern day civilizations of The Eastern Hemisphere.
