Going Green is GREAT! I teach Language Arts/Literacy, Math, and Social Studies. My students are in 5th grade. This marks the students last year of elementary school before they venture into the unchartered waters of middle school.

While our school boasts a balanced literacy program, we lack novels which are critical in order to expose children to modern day and classic authors, true-life situations, and the ability to become part of the story following the characters through a journey in which a definitive problem and solution exists.

Objective Requesting forty (40) copies of the novel, Hoot by Carl Hiaasan, and Audio CD of the story to teach across the curriculum for the fifth grade students. Mission Statement The awareness and understanding of global warming and protecting animals and our natural resources within the environment is a crucial necessity when discussing human interaction with the environment in Science and Social Studies classes. Early intervention and awareness among students concerning these prevalent global topics are something that needs to be addressed in the classroom in order to preserve the world we live in so our students may continue to grow and nurture others throughout their academic and professional careers. Through the use of a well written and respected novel, such as Hoot, many facets of environmental awareness can be taught throughout Science, Art, Computers, Social Studies, and Language Arts and Literacy.

By securing your support, students can experience issues that affect our society and develop a love for our environment and the creatures that exist in it encouraging them to become active participants in preserving and restoring the beauty that our planet has to offer.
