Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Learning to cherish the gift of being different and unique is a theme that runs through many of Kevin Henkes' books, and a theme that is important for my students to internalize. I am a first grade teacher in a working class community where many of my students don't have their own books at home. Being able to bring rich literature with moving messages into the lives of my students is an important goal for me as a teacher. The literature of Kevin Henkes provides great opportunity for student learning through an author study in my first grade classroom.

Because many of my students don't have a large library of books at home, it is especially important for me to find high quality literature to read to my students. To further enrich their experience, we study a new author every month. While studying this author, the students are inspired to read these books independently in the classroom, check them out at the public library, research the author on the Internet, study the author's writing style and apply writing techniques to their own writing, and imitate the art in the books.

A Kevin Henkes author study will give students to opportunity for all of this learning and more! I am hoping to receive 15 of Kevin Henkes' most popular children's picture books in hardcover to be able to read to my students year after year as part of an author study. Having these books housed in my classroom will allow students to be able to enjoy the books all year, rather than for just one month of the year. It will give students the opportunity to read them independently, read them with their favorite reading buddy, or borrow them to read at home with their parents.

With your help, my students will have a richer and more powerful learning experience. Your donation will make it possible for my students to enjoy their favorite literature all through the school year and be able to share this literature with their families. Thank you for your commitment to our country's youth!
