I teach fourteen second grade students at a small low-income school. In second grade we focus on creating fluent readers. For a student to be an efficient reader they must first be fluent. One of the best ways to become a fluent reader is by reading poetry. Poetry teaches the kids to read in rhythm.

I work with struggling readers in small groups. We start every lesson by reading a poem and practicing it a few times. After we read our poem we start our lesson. The students instantly start reading at a better pace. Not only does working with poetry make the students better readers, but it is also fun. Working with students on skills is not always exciting. When we incorporate poetry into the lesson the kids are more enthusiastic.

I have been using poetry books that were left from the previous teacher. They are fun and the kids have a good time reading them, but I want more of a variety of poems. I want to reach all readers and interests with the poems we read. With the books that I have requested we will be able to reach all readers interest area as well as create more fluent readers.

Think about being a struggling reader and then being given a book you are not interested in. It would become boring and you would lose interest the book and reading altogether. This is the way my students feel about reading practice when I am unable to incorporate fun reading materials. With the materials I have requested, I will be able to make learning to read fluently fun.
