My classroom is filled with 18 children eager to explore the world. We are currently writing (and set to publish!) an ABC book about animals. We also keep busy around the school by reading to the office staff, pre-K children and exploring our campus. Our school is a neighborhood school set in a small town in Florida. As a public school our funding is dependent upon the current economy and state education budget. Our parents are typically both working living paycheck to paycheck.

Kindergarten math is no longer just about shapes! These days we begin to introduce higher order thinking skills such as algebra, geometry, time, and money as well as addition and subtraction. Several of our curriculum text chapters have a 'challenge' section that requires the use of individual calculators. With ZERO supply money this year the purchase of calculators is absolutely out of the question. We wind up skipping those pages entirely and my students always ask why we can't do those pages! I feel terrible in denying students a learning opportunity they are eager to explore because I do not have calculators!

The basic calculators requested are a good size for small hands with just enough buttons to perform basic functions that we cover (addition & subtraction). These calculators are also a non-consumable item so next year's students will reap the benefits of the donation as well. They are designed to withstand rough handling and the inevitable drop on the floor. The design has high contrast primary color buttons with easy to read display and is perfect for 5 and 6 year olds.

Math skills are critical to student success in all grades. Kindergarten is no exception! Just because a child is young doesn't mean they cannot learn to love number processes and never develop a fear of arithmetic. Help me help children - with individual calculators students become empowered learners as they explore mathematics and technology is a simple format.
