I am a first grade teacher in a school that is classified as "Title One", this means that over 90% of our children are on free and/or reduced lunch. I have twenty very energetic students that need every opportunity to become successful. The school is represented by a very diverse population. In my class 50 percent of the students are English as Second Language Learners.

My students have a state reading comprehension test that they have to take every nine weeks. The students do not seem to understand the concepts that are involved with reading comprehension. I want to have students that can read and understand exactly what they are reading. I only have a limited amount of materials to help them strengthen their reading comprehension skills.

The students in my class are in need of some resources to help them with their reading comprehension. The students can identify the character and the setting in the story, but there is so much more. The resources that I chose will help the students understand the different concepts such as sequencing, main idea, drawing conclusions, and recalling facts and details. I have chosen the read and match activity to help my students with the basics, before getting into the harder concepts. I have chosen the reading comprehension wheel as a quick way to question the students about their reading. I also chose the highlight the clues flip chart to show the students how to search for clues and generate class room discussions.

You will make it possible for my students to become proficient in reading comprehension. How great would it be if every student had the proper tools to enhance their learning and enrich their lives? I believe that these materials will prepare students to become life long readers and learners.
