Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are my heroes. They have overcome great odds to get to where they are today. Although most of my students are at least two years behind their grade-level peers and struggle with a wide range of disabilities, they persevere and never give up. I teach a special education resource classroom for grades kindergarten through fifth grade in a Title 1 school where most of my students come from poverty level households.

I am going to be honest, the kind of education that produces great results is not often found in the poorer schools around the nation. I have dreams for the kind of education I could provide for my underprivileged students but until I found donorschoose.org I never thought these dreams could be fulfilled. I have seen my students go from a completely hopeless attitude to one of excitement about learning all because of a few extra resources in my classroom.

My students have become indifferent to the lecture, follow-along teaching style that they have grown up with. Education does not meet their ever-changing and technology-driven interests. I know it's a lot, I know it's a long shot, but for the sake of my students I have to ask: is there anyone out there who would like to provide a document camera for my classroom? A document camera is an incredible learning tool that basically digitalizes anything you put in it's view and projects it onto the board. I have seen usually reserved and uninterested students take an immediate interest in learning just because of the technology involved. Considering that the superintendent of our district just sent out an email labeling our district as having "ancient technology", I couldn't agree more considering I don't even have an overhead projector, and my computer is so old, it doesn't even recognize current software.

The generous people who give to donorschoose.org are really my only hope for providing a better education for my students. Please consider being the person to help bring excitement and interest into the otherwise dull education of my students. They already deal with enough issues in their life, education shouldn't be one of them.
