Working to learn is extremely more effective than learning to work. I teach Career Management, a transitional course for our Freshman Academy. The interdisciplinary model for our Freshman Academy includes Career Management, World History, Earth & Environmental Science, English I, and Algebra I. Our team chose Career Management in order to assist our freshman in the transition from middle school to high school by providing a curriculum that includes character education, soft skills introduction and reinforcement, education planning, and career planning.

Our high school is located in a town that the median income is $20,263, compared to the national median income of $41,994. We felt as though this program was needed in order to assist our community by providing an equal opportunity for every single freshman coming to our school. Thus, our mission was born: The Mission of the Freshman Academy is to provide a smooth transition for every student from middle to high school regardless of previous academic performance, family background, socioeconomic status, race, or gender. It is our purpose to improve the overall culture of the community by providing a solid foundation of rigorous academic expectation, while fostering positive growth in social/emotional behaviors and attitudes. The entire Freshman Academy Team pledges itself to these student outcomes. We are looking to create a service/product-based business to serve our school. We want to start a print shop, offering printing services: copies, binding, presentations, portfolios, resumes, cover letters, marketing materials, etc.

Our goal is to teach the concepts of the Career Management course through work-based learning versus simply lecturing the concepts. We felt, as a team, that work-based learning would increase rigor, relevancy, and retention. In order to get started, we need a laminator in order to begin the presentations, portfolio, resume, cover letter, and laminating facets of our Career Management business.

Thank you in advance for supporting our vision. Your kind generosity will open up the doors to the realistic world of work and solidify the concepts of my students' Career Management class. This will definitely provide a firm foundation for the success in our student's journey throughout high school and onto college. It will also serve as an excellent bridge from school to work!
