My students need a collection of books and activities/games dealing with life issues, including parents divorcing, moods, abuse and self-esteem.

As a social worker in a very financially restricted inner city school, I see a variety of students with social, emotional and poverty related needs. At the present time, I have few books and materials dealing with the issues of today's families. These issues involve children in single parent homes, children with an incarcerated parent, children who are cared for in grandparents' homes, children that live in homes with parents who have alternative lifestyles, children with a deceased parent and children who have been abused or witnessed violence. I am in constant search of materials that help all students to feel that there are many kinds of families. We need more relevant books and supplies addressing today's diverse social issues. We read many books that help the children to understand different family situations. We also do activities that help the children to express their feelings, build self esteem and problem solve. Being part of the group is a great help for the students to see that there are many children in non-traditional families. The group helps students to problem solve different issues that may be happening in their families. Please help my students learn that there are many different kinds of families. Help them to express their emotions, fears and joys. Help them to feel good about themselves so they can succeed in school and in life.
