Want to join me on a journey encouraging my students to make smarter and more Eco-friendly choices? Every year I teach around 150 sixth-grade scientists and I am always looking for ways to keep their learning opportunities current and engaging.

Currently we are in the midst of an energy crisis. High energy costs are directly affecting my students and their respective families. Earlier this year, during a lab investigation, I borrowed our custodian's infrared thermometer to measure the temperature change of a chemical reaction we were doing in class. Ironically, the students were more interested in the thermometer itself. This led to a demonstration of its ability to record temperature of everything in the room with a push of the button (It really is amazing how something so simple can hold a sixth-grader's attention for such a period of time). They became increasing intrigued when I measured the temperature of a window with open blinds and a window with the blinds closed and found a difference in temperature. One student wondered aloud, "Does that mean that closing the blinds saves energy?"

The stage was now set for a wonderful inquiry based learning activity to investigate my student's question. All I need now is infrared thermometers for students to collect our data. Students will then compile and graph the data in order to draw conclusions. After confirming the positive connection between closing the blinds and saving energy, my students will publicize their discovery throughout the school and encourage teachers to "close the blinds" to save energy. A close look at energy bills before and after our investigation will allow us to determine the effectiveness of our campaign to save energy in our school.

Currently, schools nationwide spend more money annually on energy costs than on textbooks and other instructional material. In the big picture, your contribution will allow my students to help our school save energy. This will save our school money and allow for more instructional supplies to be purchased. More closer to home, your support will provide my students with a tool to investigate the benefits of insulation. It will empower them to make more environmentally conscious choices that they will take with them into their homes and pass along to family and friends.
