I teach seventh grade language arts in an urban area. Over 77% of students are currently receiving a free or reduced priced lunch, so I teach students from low income families. My twelve and thirteen year old students are unique, and on a daily basis, they deal with all the issues that surround poverty.

My students rarely read for pleasure because they have a difficult time finding books that hold their interest. Our school library has a limited selection of books, and students will go weeks without reading anything while their names are on a waiting list for a good book. With the popularity of the Twilight series, my students have become enthralled with reading about vampires. I currently have one copy of Ninth Grade Slays, and the teacher next door has one copy of Twilight. Students have created a lengthy waiting list for both of those books.

By providing my classroom with the books my students need, my students’ reading habits will change drastically. These books will encourage reading for pleasure while improving reading comprehension. Some of the titles I am requesting are Eighth Grade Bites, Ninth Grade Slays, The Vampire Diaries, and the entire Twilight series.

Your donation will help my students see that reading is not just a school subject. Reading is a pleasurable activity. For my students, reading is growth, empowerment, and a future.
