Reading in Comfort Increasing Reading

My students need 16 bean bag chairs to turn our classroom into a book club. I have found (through some VERY non-scientific research) that my students read more and lose themselves in the story faster if they are comfortable when they read.

I teach GATE: gifted and talented education grades 3-5. These kids are misfits in their regular classroom so they come to me 150 minutes a week to socialize and think in their unique ways. My job is to teach them both cognitive and social skills because they have the potential to be the leaders of the world, but they need the encouragement and support system. That is my job through cognitive, social, and service learning projects.

My gifted students love to read. But they are reading books way beyond their grade level and like to read in bed, on the couch,laying upside down, or in a special reading chair they might have. In GATE we do a lot of reading for pleasure and research. I want to create a comfortable reading area for my students. In the past I have asked them to bring in bean bag chairs or over-sized pillows, but not all the students have these comforts at home. It would be WONDERFUL to provide a comfortable reading area for ALL of my students.

I am asking for 16 bean bag chairs to create a book club reading environment. I strongly believe that reading in comfort helps the students read more, longer, and deeper.

Your donation to this project- bean bags for comfortable reading, will create a real life reading environment for my students. I know from experience that they will read more and read deeper.
