My students need a disarticulated skeleton in order to learn how a forensic scientist would determine identifying characteristics (such as height) from only bones.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Crime is everywhere! My high school students are looking for ways to make a difference in society. They see shows like CSI on television - and they think this is a cool way to use math & science as a career. I teach Honors Forensic Science to 11th and 12th grade students. This is not a required class - they choose to take it. This can give them an advantage when it comes to college because it brings logical thinking skills into play. Forensic Science grabs their attention in school. They learn how forensics is used in daily police work; and they are exposed to the necessity of using math & science regularly.
I started the forensic science program at our school from scratch 4 years ago. Every supply, every piece of equipment that we now have for the program has been something that we either held fundraisers for - or has been donated. Our science budget has been cut back even further this year - which means to keep this program growing - even more help is needed.
We are requesting a disarticulated skeleton. We will use this to measure the length of the long bones - and to determine approximate height. In addition we will use the skeleton to teach anatomical position as well as learning the names and positioning of the bones.
Your gift will make it possible for my students to go beyond just reading about the techniques in the textbook. They will be able to gain hands-on experience working with bones that are not wired together - it will give them a more life-like experience.
