Cabin Fever

My students need 275 paintbrush pens to illustrate a children’s story on cardboard tubes.

Cabin Fever- I am an art teacher for students in grades two through five. With every project I attempt to give students the opportunity to express what they have learned, or will learn, in other curriculum areas. I believe this approach helps to promote greater comprehension and retention of the material being covered, and reveals how learning is a never-ending process. Even after we reach adulthood we continue to learn new information everyday; however, finding opportunities to express our ideas or participate in cooperative learning experiences, are few and far between. Therefore, each year I plan a project for both students and parents. The project is started and completed on one Saturday, and this year is scheduled for March 28. Last year's participants numbered in the region of 300 parents and children who completed an 8’ by 12’ mural of the United States now on display in one of our hallways. For this year I had a number of carpet tubes donated and cut into 5’ sections. The ends of each section were notched out and the parts were put together to construct a log cabin. Participants this year will be handed one section of the cabin and a popular children’s story. Each groups assignment is to re-tell their story on the cardboard tube in pictures or words from beginning to end. The finished tubes will be reassembled for an extraordinary reading cabin in our library. I am asking for 55 packages of paintbrush pens. Having these pens available for groups would save time and will lessen the mess made from 300 people washing paintbrushes. Furthermore, using these paintbrush pens would eliminate the use of water for brighter and more precise colors in our community art project.
