Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why shouldn't low income Latino students get to learn real Economics? There is no reason. My students are 12th graders about to graduate into a life in a community with a HUGE need for innovative thinkers. I want to help provide that.
Our district (like many in our state) is broke. Unfortunately, so are my students. They are handed poorly written textbooks that give them no connection to their real lives and the challenges they face. They live in an environment filled with graffiti, trash, and dirty air. They want to see new ideas about how to solve these problems, but the books we have just bore them to death with completely impractical knowledge that does not challenge them to think critically and apply their knowledge to the needs of their community.
One of the goals of my Economics class is to have students apply their knowledge of Economics to real-world situations. In his new book, "Hot, Flat, and Crowded", Thomas Friedman discusses solutions to the problems facing our environment and goes into detail about economic solutions to these problems. If I can get a class set of these books for my students to read, they will not only have an opportunity to see how the ideas they are learning in Economics are used in the world around them, but they will be able to apply these ideas to their community. They will be empowered with the tools of Economics - incentives, innovation, and choice. They will be able to share their ideas and goals with each other in class and hopefully take those ideas to the larger school community and to their homes. This book not only shows the challenges that we our facing in dealing with the environment, but will challenge my students to use what they learn more locally and will inspire them to consider higher education.
There are many who feel that their donations go to help people in need. How many can say that their donations went to help students learn to go out and provide that help themselves? By helping to provide these books to my students, you are giving them the tools to do just that. They will be challenged to use the education that so many of their peers take for granted. Please help me give them this opportunity.
