Technology...Keep up or get left behind! I am a fourth grade reading and writing teacher at an inner city school where computers are limited in schools and homes. It is a low socioeconomic school where more than 90% are from disadvantage families.

Sometimes it is easy to assume that students have certain resources that are a neccesity during these days and time, but boy was I wrong. We are currently working on black history projects and more than 80% of my students do not have a computer at home or transportation to a library. Therefore, they are using the outdated and malfunctioning computer in my class. They do not know how to surf the web or how to type a word document. These are skills that are pertinent in today's professional world. They are already at a disadvantaged and not by choice. As a concerned educator, it is my duty to close this technological gap and help them acquire some necessary skills that will assist them in fulfilling their goals and aspirations in life.

I am requesting two notebook computers in order to allow the students to complete research projects (i.e. Black History, Science Fair, and etc.). Also, because of the limited space in the classroom, the students will be able to have their computer workstation at their desk with the laptops. They can explore a variety of educational websites, such as Brain Pop to enhance their reading and writing abilities/skills. These resources will be used over and over throughout the years and will impact the lives of many.

Your generosity will ensure that these students are not left behind in a fast paced and ever changing society. They will no longer be at a technological disadvantage and will be able to compete against some other students that are fortunate to have such resources and skills.
