Teenage girls struggle with identity issues. They wonder how they fit into their peer group and whether or not their self is good enough. When presented with stories of young women who discover, though hardship, struggle, and adversity, that their self is indeed good enough, these young girls will be strengthened and encouraged to be themselves. Novels provide people with a safe way to explore ideas. Reading about a girl who is struggling with identity issues is much safer and more comfortable than exploring one's own identity issues, yet many parallels can be draw between the two experiences. Even when it is difficult to articulate, young people will sympathize with the characters in novels when they recognize a similar situation to their own. Even when the big details are different (how could Anne Frank's experience possibly be compared to life in the ghettos of America's big cities today?), young people will be drawn to the strength and heart of the characters. Additionally, students will be encouraged by having books of their own. Many of the students I have encountered have never been handed a brand new book and told "this belongs to you." They do not know how to start at the beginning of a book and read it through to the end. They do now know how to take care of a book, to protect the spine and the pages, to use a bookmark, to pause and review something in a previous chapter. These things, which may seem so painfully obvious to avid readers, must be taught in order for young people to enjoy reading novels. This unit is intended for use with a small group of committed students in a separate class, after-school group, or summer program. A copy of each book on the reading list and a blank composition book should be provided on the first day of class. The first few classes will be used to guide students in reading novels, book care, and journal writing. Topics will include identity, diversity, and commonality of experiences within the group. Students will also explore the knowledge they bring to the class of the topics, groups, and events in each novel through mini-quizzes, map activities, and historical research. Students will be expected to make a minimum of five journal entries per week. The journals will not be read unless the student requests to share an entry with the teacher and/or the class. They will simply be checked for completion. There will be reading deadlines and each class will be spent discussing a portion of a novel, exploring the historical significance to further understand the story, and creating a final product (written, computer generated, or artistic). Some classes may be used to view audio-visual resources, such as the movie Paper Clips. At the end of the unit, I would like to have each student select a book to take with them as a reminder of all that they have learned. I would also like to have the students record a video segment to encourage other girls to participate in the unit in the future.
