What if Rumpelstiltskin were to awaken in present day America after a 100 year nap? He would see people with I-Pods, cell phones, Tom-Tom's, and lap tops. He would wander the streets in amazement wondering what fantastic place could he be in. Then, if he were to enter a school he would know exactly where he was. The sad truth is that our schools are lagging far behind in technology. We are stuck in the past. If we are to prepare our children for the future, technology must become an integral part of the curriculum. I teach kindergarten at a pre-k-12 school in a low income, rural, farming community. Our school is very old and lacking in many of the modern conveniences of newer schools. The original portion of the school was built in 1939 and has seen various additions over the years. However, I would challenge you to find a group of harder working, more dedicated teachers anywhere.

Recently, several of my co-workers got together to write a technology grant and after months of hard work their efforts paid off. Our school has recently been awarded a grant for new computers. Unfortunately, the grant does not cover the furniture necessary to utilize the computers. In short, the computers are of no use without computer tables to house the computers, keyboards, and mice.

My students need two computer work stations and four chairs to adequately accommodate four computers and four students. I would like to have the tables by the time I receive the computers. I do not want to have the computers sitting in boxes or, worse yet, sitting on the floor when my students could be using them to facilitate their learning. I have been teaching for ten years and this will be the first time that I have had working student computers for my children. You cannot imagine how exciting this is for us especially when the majority of my students do not have access to them at home. Finally, with these computers I will be able to utilize the many educational resources available on the web to enhance the learning in my classroom. With these work stations and computers I plan to organize my students into small groups for more individualized instruction. For example, while one group works at the computers, one group could work on writing and another group could enjoy a guided reading lesson. The groups would later rotate so that each group benefits from the three learning stations.
