Just for the Health of It-Empowering Students Towards a Healthy Lifelong Learning. I teach Health Occupations to 7th and 8th grade students. Through this project, 8th graders will have an opportunity to become peer educators by creating storybooks about health and nutrition and presenting them during a Health Literacy Fair to 6th and 7th grade students.

According to an article from www.stpetetimes.com, we are "facing soaring rates of childhood obesity and diabetes" where "about 16 percent of American children and adolescents are overweight". Federal law actually requires schools to take action. Federal law states that "any district participating in a program authorized by the National School Lunch Act must develop a school wellness policy that promotes nutrition education, physical activity and other wellness information" (www.stpetetimes.com). As a part of the school district, we are obligated to promote health and wellness for our students and staff. In order to empower and engage students in a healthy lifelong learning, we need to make sure that students have the information they need. According to Healthy People 2010, Health Communication Terminology, "health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions". Developing health literacy will empower students to make informed choices and decisions about their health and well-being (Virtually Healthy Newsletter). Students need to be healthy to succeed academically.

Students will use a document camera to manipulate and create storybooks about health and nutrition. They will participate in physical interaction with data and visual concept representations. The document camera will give students the opportunity to share virtually anything that they have found in their learning or experiences, projecting it as a virtual image without the need for transparencies. The equipment will also be used when students are introduced to the health websites.

“The extent of physical, emotional, psychological, social problems present in some student populations is so great that the primary mission of the school-education-cannot proceed if these pathologies are not addressed.” —Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development Your generous donation will ensure that my students are empowered to make the right choices to healthy lifelong learning. Students need to be healthy to succeed academically.
