Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I have the fortune to be teaching at a dual immersion program in East San Jose. I have a lively group of third graders whom are learning academic subjects in English and Spanish. My classroom is diverse as I not only have native Spanish speakers but students of different ethnicities as well. My school is part of the small schools movement in San Jose, but in a high need community.

A few months ago I had a special guest come into my classroom while we were doing a unit on money. He was a banker and for his presentation he brought in a document camera. The kids were amazed at that piece of technology as they had never seen anything like that in their lives. The presenter had the students present, using the document camera, something that they had written and everyone wanted the opportunity to share simply because of the camera. I then began to think about all the many different types of uses that having a document camera in my classroom could help me do and how my students engagement would increase. Not only will it help me with that, but this year my students are lacking key skills that good readers and writers do while writing and reading and having a document camera will facilitate me in modeling lessons so they can acquire these skills that they so badly need.

As a teacher when I model a lesson either in math, writing, and even reading I use the over head projector fairly often. Now, for this sort of modeling I need to make sure that I have to have transparencies ahead of time. Imagine the possibilities of never having to make transparencies again! Or of the possibility of projecting the actual textbook that we are reading on through the camera and having students actually go through with me as I model how to identify the titles, bold text, key words and all of the other important things within a text that a good reader has to look at (something that my kids are still having difficulty with); or even modeling how to edit their writing as I have my rough draft (the actual one) in front of me and that they could all see; or even having students bring their actual notebooks where they did a math problem and have them model for other students, using their actual work, to show how they solved a problem. This is just the beginning of what a document camera will allow us to do in our classroom, but there are too many other ones to write about.

My district right now is going through so many budget cuts, as are many of our public schools, that acquiring something like this through them would be impossible. I would pay for it out of my pocket, but I am already spending so much of my own money on paper, pencils, erasers, markers and many other things that we use on a daily basis, which makes it impossible for me to afford this wonderful piece of technology. When that presenter used that camera in my classroom I saw my students faces light up in a way that I hadn't seen before. Technology is their future as well as ours, I hope that you can consider helping our classroom with acquiring this piece of technology, when my students faces light up again (because now our classroom will have one), it would be your help that caused those faces to light up. More importantly, it would have been your help that allows my students to learn in a meaningful way.
