Refugee Children with Stories to Tell

My students need 30 copies of "Of Beetles and Angels" and 35 blank composition books.

I teach a 5th grade comprehensive class with 6 refugee children (4 Somalian, 1 Ethiopian, and 1 Albanian). Our school currently has 100 ESL students, most of who come to America as refugees from war torn countries. Our population is high at-risk and low poverty. We are always looking for ways for our ESL students to move forward by reflecting on past experiences and future opportunities.

One of my most promising ESL students read a book called “Of Beetles and Angels.” This memoir is about a Somalian refugee boy who comes to America, overcomes many obstacles, works hard, and fulfills his dream of graduating from Harvard University. The book so inspired this special student that she began to write her own memoir, sharing experiences and family stories that are exceptionally riveting. I encouraged her to complete the book and promised to help her publish it for her friends and family. She asked that we read “Of Beetles and Angels” as a class, and invite all our students to share their special life stories and dreams for the future.

In order to support her goals, we need a class set of “Of Beetles and Angels.” This book will provide an opportunity for American students to understand the struggles and sacrifices our ESL families have endured. It will also provide a window for all students to reflect on their own struggles and write about them in a healing way. I am also requesting 35 blank composition books for final publication and keepsakes.

Your support of this project will empower a young ESL girl to see her goal realized. You will help us build a culture of respect and understanding between our American-born and ESL students. You will provide a venue for authentic, reflective writing that students will remember and embrace for a lifetime. And finally, through this text, you will inspire young minds to realize their potential as prospective college students with hope for a better tomorrow.
