Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ours is a high-needs school district in a small city, located in upstate New York. Demographics: more than half of the students on free or subsidized lunch programs. More than half of the students are of minority ethnicities.

My students have discovered that top art schools award merit scholarships based on an applicant's ability to draw accurately from life. Drawing from plaster statues provides an art school screening committee with evidence as to a students' talent, dedication and teachability. This is because "cast drawing" requires learning how to measure and depict accurately. Because the student cannot claim "personal interpretation", this kind of drawing provides little opportunity for excuses - either it is done precisely right, or, it is not. Producing a series of superb cast drawings my students realized has nothing to do with economic privilege. Instead, success with this kind of drawing is about hard work and smart choices - it levels the playing field. My students have researched the techniques and methods associated with this highly exacting method of art training and are eager to begin.

Drawing from the cast shows artistic potential and is the first step towards the ultimate drawing challenge - drawing the human figure. Measuring, organizing and editing of drawing, while referring to anatomical books and (clothed) models would allow my students to understand how to depict the human form, by following the training which benefited the great master artists of the past.

My training includes 11 years at the NY Academy of Art, the only accredited masters program in the country devoted to painting, sculpting and drawing the human figure. As an alum, I have taught drawing to high school students at the Academy. My students can benefit from my experience if they are provided with the tools to begin their own training. Cast drawing would put them on the path to becoming scholarship-competitive.
