Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach art and film to inner city high school students with high needs. We have had a lot of success with our film classes and would like to continue improving them.

I have two film classes with approximately 20 students in each and very limited resources. We currently have one camcorder and three DV tapes.

Students need be able to manage their footage. As it is right now, 40 students are sharing three tapes and taping over footage, a practice I do not want them to use because it can lead to having to re-shoot entire films a second time. With 4 additional microphones and tapes for recording, students will be able to greatly improve the sound quality of their films. Without decent mics it is very difficult to pick up clear dialog on the built-in mic on the small DV camera we currently have.

We have done well with what little we have. One film won second place in the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival on Social Justice and Best Documentary at the Santa Monica Teen Film Festival. To think of what we could do with more materials and equipment is really exciting! You would be helping our students pursue an endeavor that builds self confidence and enthusiasm for school. It will also give them experience with something that they could pursue in college and beyond. You will be helping them to voice their unique perspective and that is an amazing gift!
