Making Money Count

My students need 1 Money Math Grocery Store, 1 Dollars and Cents software CD-ROM, 1 Nasco Special Needs Money Center and 1 Nasco Equivalence Kit.

My students are over age high school students with special needs in a very high need community. Many of them are not on a diploma track, but need to learn essential skills for surviving in the community. Our school is still in the rebuilding process after one of the largest natural disasters in the history of the United States

Students need to know how to estimate the costs of things they want. They also need to begin to make budgeting decisions as they prepare to go out into a post school world

The math manipulatives and software that I have requested will give my students the added assistance they need to become familiar with the challenges of working with money. The Special Needs Money Center and Grocery Store Kit are designed to give students the opportunity to work with various denominations of money both dollars and cents; making correct change, figuring prices for items, preparing shopping lists and estimating costs. The software that is requested will provide further opportunities and scenarios for the students to work out as they become more adept at working with money. Part of the software program's goals is to help students get acquainted with working with bank accounts and balancing check books. These skills will prove invaluable as they prepare to leave the school setting and become involved in the world of work. The equivalency set will be another way to bring home ideas about estimating things like sales brochures and commercials that advertise things like half off sales or 20% markdowns.

Your help will make it possible for my students to be successful in the community. They will be well prepared for the challenges of creating budgets and be better able to be independent young adults.
