Imagine the magical hum of twenty-two writers, hard at work on their own stories, not one of the authors more than six years old! Our K/1 classroom is in a small, semi-rural mountain community in California. Our school has a large population of socio-economically disadvantaged students. One quarter of the students in our class are English language learners, and one half are struggling to meet grade level standards in reading and writing. Ask any student what they love to do most at school, and you'll hear an emphatic "Write!"

School supply budgets are currently frozen. As our principal recently explained at a staff meeting, our district has moved from a temporary budget freeze to an "ice age." Teachers must rely on donations and our own pocketbooks to put supplies in students' hands. Parents who are able to, often send requested supplies of paper, band aids, snacks or other consumable supplies, but I can't count on their already challenged financial situations to obtain the supplies I need to launch my new brainstorm, a school-to-home traveling writing project.

I am requesting the core supplies -- markers, journals, book bags -- students would need to write stories that can travel between home and school. All students in my class, kindergarten and 1st grade, will have the tools they need to work on their writing craft in class and at home. Their families will have a direct involvement in their development as writers, while I continue to nurture their growth with classroom instruction and inspiration. As students' writing travels between home and school, I will support their individual efforts with feedback and resources specific to their writing. Recent research on successful readers and writers indicates that direct daily experience with text reading and authentic writing lead to the most growth in students' independent skills.

Your gift will strengthen the bridge between my students' home and school lives, and allow my students to celebrate their accomplishments as emerging and beginning writers.
