Ms. R. Langford Academy
Chicago, IL Grades 6-8

Come and tour our Egyptian Museum!!Three teachers and two 6th grade classrooms are collaborating on the design and creation of an all-school Egyptian Museum. As the Visual Arts teacher, our art class activities will supplement the social-studies curriculum and bring the life and culture of Ancient Egypt alive for our students. We are a high-need community and a school that is determined to raise our level of academic accomplishment. Our students have been working hard this year to build a more cooperative and supportive school community, and to show our parents and neighborhood that, with respect for all and a concentrated effort, we can make our dreams come true. Our students show determination and pride to do their best--this activity will provide an opportunity for students of all learning styles and levels to work cooperatively and build their confidence in creative problem solving.

Our students face many obstacles: Our school closed last year and reopened with a new faculty and administration. We are working with students and their parents to build a community of respect and accomplishment using a new discipline code and incentives for student success. Sadly, though, many students do not receive the necessary parental support, so teachers are devoting themselves to providing exceptional emotional support as well as exciting learning opportunities. Our highly energetic teachers and supportive administrators are motivating students to dig deeply to achieve and learn. We hope to make our 6th grade study of Ancient Egypt a new tradition of cooperative learning and creative problem solving!

Our Egyptian Museum will be a showcase for sixth grade students to share their learning and accomplishments with the entire school. When our research, creative efforts and museum construction is completed, parents and other classrooms will be invited to take a "tour" of our museum, led by 6th grade tour guides. This activity presents an opportunity to build community within our school, where students are teaching other students about what they have researched and discovered about an ancient civilization that has influenced so many aspects of life today!

Your donation of these art supplies would make the creation of our Egyptian Museum and and this enriching cooperative learning activity possible-- without it, we are left with paper, pencils, markers and crayons. We want to create the most "professional" museum displays possible and your donation of these requested art supplies would make our dream a reality! We hope to take field trips to the Egyptian collection at the Field Museum and the U. of Chicago's Oriental Institute to observe actual Egyptian artifacts, upon which we will model our work! Thanks for considering a donation to a project which, we hope, will begin a new tradition for our middle school children.
