"I'm a first year teacher and I teach biology to freshmen, chemistry to sophomores, and anatomy & physiology to juniors and seniors. The school has about 1000 students from a variety of home situations, and some are bused in from nearby cities. This project proposal is specifically for the anatomy course.
Anatomy & Physiology is a relatively new course at the high school and there are not many supplies. We are working on developing a new curriculum for the class and do not have much to go on - so the sky's the limit in terms of creativity! Students who sign up for the class typically are interested in studying science in college; some want to be doctors, some want to be dentists, and of course there are some who have no idea!
The ultimate goal for the class is to prepare students for material that they will see as a first or second year science major in college. Certainly they will be expected to use microscopes and may be required to take a whole class on histology.
This will be much easier to accomplish with slides related to the different types of tissues that are discussed in class! In many cases there is only one copy of a type of slide, and there are a few slides that we don't have at all. Ideally we'd benefit from having a class set so that students can work on an extended project where they have a set of slides that are their "own," and use the set to prepare a histology portfolio documenting their work.
Many of the activities students could potentially complete are very similar to what they may experience in college. Thus by having the slides, anatomy students will be better prepared to succeed as science majors!
My students need 8 boxes in which to store slides as well as a variety of slides of epithelial and connective tissues.

Dear Leslie, Dad and Anonymous Donors,
The science department and I have really appreciated having these new materials this year. When I first made the list of epithelial and connective tissue slides and storage cases for my anatomy and physiology course, I did not realize that our biology courses would benefit as well.
Previously, our school had all slides mixed together so that it was difficult to determine how many of each slide we actually had. It actually took me several hours to figure out how many slides to ask for from DonorsChoose. Not only have these additional slides helped our supply, but also the storage cases have proved to be a truly effective time saver! I anticipate that we will be ordering more in the future.
Furthermore, having multiple copies of slides is infinitely helpful in class. Students often have trouble applying something they've learned in lecture, so we try to teach a small bit of information in class, and have students work on that one piece in lab. This simply was not possible for histology with only one copy of each slide. With a classroom set now, I know that both our biology and anatomy students alike will be able to take much more away from the activity.
Thanks everyone for your generosity. Our department, our students, and I can't thank you enough!
With gratitude, Ms. D.

Dear Leslie, Dad and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you all very much for your generosity! Truly I am grateful for the opportunity you have given to the students and me! Once materials arrive, students will be able to add to the histology portfolios they have begun with some slides that the school already has. These additional materials provided through your donations will enrich their experience tremendously. The ability to proceed with this ongoing project encourages students to take ownership of their work over time, and I believe they will really be proud of the final products they create. DonorsChoose seems like a really well run site, and I look forward to exploring the other projects on this site in the future!
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I gave to this project because I know how hard it often is for teachers to get adequate supplies for their students, and because I APPLAUD this new teacher's imagination, creativity, and enthusiasm. Someday her students will realize how lucky they are!"
