I teach gifted and talented students in a high need area in an impoverished town. My classroom is located in a small trailer type facility that I share with another teacher. Our room is divided by five foot tall metal cabinets and bookcases stacked and mounted back to back. Our teaching area is so cramped that every lesson either of us teaches is overheard by the other classroom. This crowded condition has prevented my students from engaging in lessons that allow them to listen to music, storytelling, old style radio shows and the like. Lately, my students have become extremely interested in a unit of study that involves identifying the mood of the population during important historical events by the music of each era. In order to listen to the music, once we find it, we have had to search for classrooms that will be unoccupied for at least 30 minutes. We have had to move to different classrooms several times in a day. Our school is overcrowded and finding an unoccupied classroom is so difficult that unfortunately we have had to temporally abandon this unit of study. In order to reopen this unit and others like it my students need a listening center. If they had a listening center they would be able to take turns listening to music, radio programs, story tellers and much more. Then the students would have the background information they need in order to continue this important unit of historical study, as well as, make their own plays and other musical creations. With your help, my students can become much more engaged in their learning and express it through their brilliant creative outlets. I need your help so that I don’t have to tell these deserving students that we can’t continue simply because we can’t afford the listening center we truly need.
