The Amazing Human Body Experience

My students need a field trip for 60 students to The Museum of Science and Technology, which includes an amazing exhibit and an educational IMAX film, and 2 buses to transport them to this museum that will enhance what they have learned in the classroom.

This project expired on May 1, 2009.

I teach at-risk students, in a district with budget restraints, that deserve an experience out of the ordinary to learn about biology.

My students are visual and kinesthetic learners who have special individual needs for learning. They typically have poor reading, writing, and test-taking skills. This has lead them to being disengaged when it comes to basic academics because of their past failures. The lesson plans I create for them have many hands-on activities and visual representations. However, they can benefit significantly from a scientific field trip out of the classroom.

I think my students should take part in a museum experience to create more visual connections and get their imaginations flowing. The Human Body exhibit at the Museum of Science and Technology will draw out their curiosity about the human systems and how they work together to maintain homeostasis. The new IMAX film called "The Human Body" will also inspire more neurons to fire and get students intrigued by how their body functions every day. It is known that on average we remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we hear and see, 70% of what we say, and 90% of what we both say and do. That means that having students walk through the chambers of a human heart, touch parts of the human brain, and take apart and put back together the human ear will benefit them tremendously. Especially when we get back to the classroom and the students present their findings, take part in a class discussion, and ask/answer questions about the exhibits. This will certainly assist them in feeling successful in this class and passing the Regents exam at the end of the year.

Unfortunately, with the way our economy has been in a steady decline, our school budgets are going the same way. This means that more funding is needed for students to have real educational experiences outside of the classroom. Think about the memories from your high school days. I'm sure you don't remember the notes or textbooks or lectures, but you're much more likely to recall the amazing trips you took to learn in a different environment. I want my students to be able to have those same memories and do something that instills a deeper understanding of biology. They are the type of learners that will truly benefit from an experience at The Museum of Science and Technology.
