Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is one such book. I truly believe in the capability of a book to open the minds of students and to teach them more about themselves. This is the point of high school English. In my classroom I use literature to empower students with confidence in who they are, a knowledge of the world around them, compassion for others, and character of the highest quality. I am currently teaching in a rural community in North Carolina hit hard by the current failing economy, with very little money for instructional resources.

In an increasingly technologically advanced society, it is a daily battle to find literature that is compelling enough to capture the hearts and minds of teenage readers. As an Honors English III teacher, this is my battle. I am limited at this point in my attempt to provide meaningful literature to my students. There is no money on a school or district level to update the small, sad English library that we have at my school. I have tried asking for help from many directions and have met resistance. Due to the turbulent economic conditions, I feel very guilty asking the students and their families to provide the required reading materials, since many of them are unable to purchase these.

With over a million and a half copies sold worldwide, The Alchemist is quickly becoming a universal masterpiece. Each time I reread this magical book I find out something new about myself. This novel is a fable about a young boy, Santiago, in search of an extravagant worldly treasure. His journey takes him from his home in Spain across the deserts of Egypt. Along the way we read stories of the treasures that Santiago finds and the people he meets. These stories teach students, as few books do, about the wisdom of listening to their hearts, following their dreams, and most importantly, that sometimes the journey is more important than the treasure found at the end of it. The Alchemist teaches students to trust in themselves and to make their own path. It has the power to change teenagers at a pivotal point in their young adulthood: the end of high school and the beginning of the rest of their lives.

As a donor, you will make it possible for me to engage my students in a journey of reading that will help them to find their personal treasures. In essence, you will be helping young people begin their journey of understanding who they are and what they can contribute to our world.
