Students Embark on a Vicarious Voyage...

My students need a digital camera and mailing envelopes to correspond internationally with college students participating in a Semester at Sea study abroad program.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Explore. Dream. Discover. Isn't that what high school should be all about? As a high school Psychology and Economics teacher in a high-need, low-income, urban school district, I believe it is my professional duty to push my students to explore, to dream, and to discover more about the world around them.

Poverty. Language. Teenage pregnancy. Limited knowledge about the world around them because they've never even been to the other side of town. My students face an ever-growing list of challenges, yet, in the face of it all, they come to school looking for something. I want that "something" to be: a growing interest and excitement about seeing the world; exploring new options; going to college; I want them to step outside of their comfort zone. Last semester I set my students up with Pen Pals in France; as a result, everyday they were eager to hear their responses. They were engaged, they were interested, they were talking to their friends and family about the e-mails they received. Students responded, "When I graduate, I want to go to France!" This semester, I want my students to experience those same emotions while communicating with college students who will be circumnavigating the globe on a Semester at Sea study abroad program.

I want my students to share pictures of their school and community with those on Semester at Sea. The digital camera will allow my students to take pictures and then write stories about where they are from. The envelopes will serve as a means to mail pictures and stories about their world to those college students traveling the world.

I want my students to appreciate where they are from while at the same time become lifelong learners about the world around them. Through this vicarious voyage, you have the opportunity to impact my students in a way that will shape their thought processes and choices for many years to come.
