My Students

My students range in grade level from 9th-12th, ages 14-19. These students also vary in cultural backgrounds. We are a small school of 800, with a high Asian population and a varied ethnic diversity with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged student population. Students work in large centers where all grade levels are mixed. The fun part is the peer teaching and mentoring that happens here. Although we are a school of choice, we are a school that does not get much funding from our district in comparison to the larger high schools in our district. The students here are incredible, they strive to be their best and do the best with the little they have.

My Project

By working with traditional 35 mm cameras and film, students will explore a deeper world of Black & White Photography. Students will learn about light metering, aperture and shutter control and gain the joy that darkroom photo can bring to their world.

After shooting photos, students will learn to process their own film and later print their pictures for the total traditional photography experience.

The art of B&W photography is experiencing a resurgence due to its peaceful, other world quality, traditional art medium. The tranquil darkroom practice will help students transform a chaotic technical world into a hands on Zen experience.
