I teach sixth grade World History and Math in rural Tennessee. We are a Title I school, with 85% of students on free or reduced-price lunch. While we have computers and projectors in the classroom, we do not have access to more advanced technology.
I enjoy enhancing the curriculum with a variety of objects such as Roman Coins, antique maps or photographs of artwork. I also use Children's literature to introduce lessons. It is difficult to give each student time to see an object or a picture in the book and keep the entire class interested.
A document camera would permit me to project an image of the object up on the large screen, thus enabling all of the students to see the item at one time. Class discussions would be more lively and more students would be engaged.
I have a fantastic group of students who love to learn. I strive every day to provide them with the best educational experience I can. Showing them actual physical examples of artifacts or art from the civilizations we study, or even enhancing the lesson with a children's book will capture their attention and significantly improve their educational experience. This document camera will be that piece of technology that will enable me to accomplish this.
