Help Prevent my Students from Becoming a Monster!

My students need 85 copies of the award winning book "Monster," by Walter Dean Myers.

My students are surrounded by "Monsters" and need a way out. I am a member of Teach For America and teach 9th grade English in an inner city school.

Reading is the foundation of any education. Unfortunately, my school cannot afford for every student to have their own, individual copy of a piece of literature. Class sets are nice while in the class, but how am I supposed to assign homework, or allow them to do a project at home if they can't take the book home? It is hard enough to get kids to read, and even harder when every time they actually get excited about something they have to wait three days until the come back to class to finish reading it.

Last year I read the book "Monster" with my students. The book is about a teen getting caught up with the wrong crowd and becoming involved in a crime he later regrets. It is written in the form of a journal and takes you through his experiences in jail, the court system, and on the streets. Not only did my students relate to the problems the protagonist was going through, thanks to DonorsChoose they all had their own copy of the book. For many of them, this was their very first book that they owned. They were shocked when I told them it was okay to write questions in it, or highlight important parts. They sense of ownership they felt allowed them to take great pride in reading for homework and the unit was an emphatic success.

Well, this year I have a whole new crop of 9th graders and they are all looking forward to reading "Monster." They have all heard stories from my former students and are eagerly waiting for the unit to begin. This is where you come in. In order to allow every student to have a book, I need help from wonderful people like you. I want to keep my students from becoming "Monsters" themselves and with you donations we can reach that goal together. Thank you and have a happy new year!
