My students need 30 copies of the book "The Book Thief".

I teach U.S. History, and my students are primarily in the 11th grade. My students live in a high poverty area in eastern Tennessee. Our school is a unique school because we live in a rural setting but often have inner city problems, such as drug use, low tax base, and poverty.

Because of state requirements, I give an End of Course test in U.S. History. Because I have to cover so much material in a short amount of time, I don't have time to spend weeks on interesting topics. I have found time each year to focus on the Holocaust. If we forget about what happened, and is still happening (Darfur), these atrocious acts will continue. My students would spend the semester on the Holocaust if we could. Because we cannot do this, I use books and projects to supplement their interests. Last semester, I used "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," which was truly loved by my students and their parents. I sold drinks for $1 in my classroom to pay for the books.

Because my students read "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" last semester, I wanted them to read another book from the same genre so I chose "The Book Thief." They are extremely interested in the Holocaust especially after we spend a few days discussing it, viewing pictures of the atrocities, using activities from the U.S. Holocaust Museum, and watching videos via the Internet about Holocaust survivors. I am always amazed at how little they know about the Holocaust, but very pleased about how much they want to know once they know a little about it. The novel, "The Book Thief" will certainly supplement their knowledge of the Holocaust along with the projects we will complete as we finish it. I will give the students a list of projects they can select to complete such as a scrapbook that shows what the book means to them or they may plan an exhibit about the 1936 Olympic Games.

Your aid will help my students understand that we must always be vigilant and aware of our entire world (not just the speck where we live)so we can avoid another genocide. I also want to empower my students to take a stand against the genocide occurring today in Darfur.
