Sensory Learning

My students need singing and interacting books, sensory balls, a bead sequencing set, juggling scarfs, a motor shape set, CDs and a lights and vibration set for sensory and communication needs.

I have a classroom of 5 children with severe sensory awareness and communication needs. Their ages are 7-10. We are a new title one classroom with limited resources.

This is a brand new special education classroom that was just opened up for the 2008-2009 school year. We started with very few resources. My students are all in wheelchairs and most have vision impairments. My students cannot do anything independently and require sensory materials,tactile materials, cause and effect materials, and hands on materials to learn. Even their awareness stage is at the very low end of the spectrum.

I am in desperate need of sensory items such as cause and effect light up balls of different materials, action communication cards for communication purposes, and light and vibrating toys also for sensory and tactile purposes. Also because my students respond to music and noise, music and sound CDs, and interactive books are very good teaching materials for them. We also need juggling scarves for sensory input, motor shape sets also for sensory output, and a bead sequencing set for hands-on-learning. My students do not communicate in any way yet, but these kinds of materials will help me to get them to an awareness stage whereas I can begin to concentrate on some kind of communication system. Any type of materials that can cause a reaction with my students will benefit them.
