Leaping Into New Learning

My students need a small group set of 8 Leapfrog TAG Readers with rechargeable batteries as an additional tool for teaching basic reading.

Yes...learning to read can be rocket science! I currently teach twenty fifth grade students in a high priority school seeking to reach the 90-90-90 status (90 percent F/R Lunch, 90 percent AA, trying to score 90 percent or above proficient in reading and math).

Leaping into reality...After analyzing last year's test results, only twenty percent of our students demonstrated proficiency on the end of grade state test. In fifth grade alone, only sixteen percent of the students demonstrated proficiency in reading. In searching for additional ways to provide my students with new ways of learning and more opportunities to read, I was introduced to the Leapfrog Learning System. Although the system is designed for primary aged students, this program provides learning opportunities that will motivate (even fifth grade) students to read. This program will also provide a chance for students to be read to at home, even when there is not an adult present to read with them. Statistics suggest that children should be read to everyday, however we are aware that most children are not read to everyday. This system will help supplement reading instruction by pronouncing unknown words, reading pages or the entire story and by asking questions to check for comprehension. While searching for small group and at home solutions to improve and increase reading, I believe that this program will do just that!

Leaping into the TAG Reading System...The TAG reading system will be used in class and out of class to provide additional learning opportunities for my students. In the classroom, TAG will be used as a small group reading center where students will go and read books independently 3-5 times a week. The TAG program will be available for those struggling readers during school who will benefit from extra scaffolding and practice. The implementation will go as follows: Day 1: The student will listen to the story and follow along as it is read to them by the program using the TAG system and headphones. Day 2: The student will reread the story, however this time using the system only when they get to an unknown word. Day 3: The student will conclude the book by reading it aloud and using the questioning capability of the TAG system to answer questions about the text. The TAG system will also be available for students to check out and take home to have more opportunities for reading and being read to. Our goal is to provide more reading experiences so that students will improve their reading, fluency and comprehension while also feeling more confident while reading aloud and to themselves.

Leaping into an Opportunity...Your help will make this project possible and ensure that my students get the opportunity to improve and increase their reading proficiency through the use of the TAG system (along with classroom instruction). Making reading fun can be difficult at times, however providing creative and engaging solutions can truly benefit struggling readers. We know that teaching reading can be rocket science, but learning to read doesn't have to be. Please support our project and watch us leap to success! Thank you!
