Schoolyard Detectives

My students need supplies for a schoolyard natural inventory including field guides, microscopes, binoculars, test tubes, contact paper and science notebooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For many of my students, scientific investigation and hands-on exploration may be the spark that inspires success in not only school, but life as well. I teach a class of energetic 2nd graders in a charter school whose mission is that all students can succeed. My students are part of a high need community - the majority are of low income, and as children of immigrants, 88% speak English as a second language.

Living in a working class community, many of my students spend their after school hours sitting indoors because it is too dangerous to play outside. Consequently, most of my students have very little exposure to science and nature. Therefore, it is vital that they receive this exposure at school. My school currently has very few science resources that are age appropriate for my second graders and this lack of resources is very limiting for their learning. Unfortunately, being a charter school, we do not have the funding to purchase new supplies, such as the science materials I am proposing.

In an effort to take science learning outdoors, I would like to turn my "city kids" into environmental scientists by bringing them to the small wooded area in our schoolyard. It is my plan to introduce my students to the enormous diversity of life that can be found right under their noses. In order to fully investigate the environment, I am asking for a set of materials to create an inventory of the natural resources found on the school property: plants, animals, geology, etc. We will make observations, identify species, create maps, and present our findings to the rest of the school. It is my hope that these investigations will stir excitement for the outdoors, and inspire the students to visit other natural areas in their community. These materials will open up a whole new world to my students and will be part of an interdisciplinary unit of study that involves math, reading, Spanish, and writing, as well as science.

Your generous donation will unlock a door and provide one-of-a-kind experiences and opportunities for a wonderful group of eager learners. Thank you for any support you can provide.
