Visualizing Our Big Ideas!

My special needs students need a Visual Presenter in order to reinforce comprehension and writing skills.

WELCOME TO THE "IDEA" CLUB! Help us visualize our BIG IDEAS! I am a Special Education teacher in an urban elementary school. We belong to a high-need community. Out of 550 students, about 75% receive free or reduced lunch. I pull out the special needs students from their regular classroom to my room to reinforce curriculum in Reading and Math.

Being a Special Education teacher, I am aware how my students struggle inside their regular classroom.Teaching them in my room with limited resources restricts the chance to reach their full potential. Our class is also called “IDEA” Club. Aside from its letter meaning: Individual with Disabilities Education Act, it also literally reflects our class goal, that is: “Each one of us inside my room has an IDEA to contribute”. My students belong to diverse backgrounds with different modes of learning and intelligences. They thrive on what is concrete: may it be visual, auditory and/or kinesthetic. All of them have reading/math comprehension skill deficits which translate to their writing. These difficulties are compounded with behavioral concerns.

In order for me to address these deficits, I have to model and show them how reading strategies are used to make meaning of the text. A visual presenter will allow us as a class to view work samples where strategies are being used and how it is used. When it is time to practice independently, they will learn to evaluate their work as well as their classmates'. Consequently, their writing will improve. This will immensely impact on their feeling of success and self-esteem. A visual presenter will surely allow my students to: 1. Be familiar with use of a technology for presentation that is easy to manipulate and would require very minimal preparation. Presenting their work to the class will help them learn through collaboration; 2. Understand how reading strategies are used in text (as each portion is analyzed); 3. Realize the difference between written work that is backed up with strong evidence versus those that are considered “weak” (based on a rubric); 4. Learn how to take down notes and be able to practice the strategy at home with their parents/guardians; 5. Be engaged during class discussion (which will reduce or eliminate behavior problems); 6. Be life-long learners who are engaged and accountable.

You and rest of the members of our community are valuable to make this "dream" a reality for my special needs students. This will not only make an academic impact on them, but it will make them feel that they too are important members of the community. My students will feel they also have something to contribute not only in school but in the entire community.
