I would like to use music to help students focus. It is easy for students to be distracted by external stimuli and get off task. To help minimize this classroom disturbance, I would like to use music during transition times (switch between subject, movement between classrooms, retrieving materials, etc.). I teach all subjects to my 5th grade students.

Strong personalities present a particularly difficult problem in the classroom. Trying to reign in these personalities on a minute-by-minute basis is an almost insurmountable task. I feel that any help in gaining control of the students, their thought process, and the expected outcome would be helpful. I have been to numerous trainings on classroom management, and the power of music was mentioned in every one of them.

To begin using music in my classroom, I would need an iPod, an iHome, and batteries. I would need the iPod so it would be easy to download the digital music. The iHome is needed so it will be compatible with the music player. The batteries are needed so the music will be portable. Most importantly, I need a remote control (which is where the iHome comes in). This is so I can be anywhere in the room and play a song. I don't want to have to walk back over to a CD player and push buttons when my presence is needed on the other side of the room.

By funding this project you will be helping me to create a positive classroom environment, most conducive to learning. I will be able to use the classroom music system for many years to come. This grant will benefit the 5th grade experience for hundreds of children.
