Success Using Science Centers

My classroom is one of twelve second grade classes, in an overcrowded school, in a developing area. I currently have 19 students in my class representing many different cultures and languages of the world. Many of them are "tourism industry" families and live in nearby apartment complexes and townhouses. These families do not have the resources to provide educational enrichment activities for their children.

In second grade, students are expected to be proficient in reading and math before the end of the year arrives. A lot of money and effort is put into supplies to help struggling students improve in these areas. One of the "forgotten" subject areas is science. I am allotted no more than 15 minutes a day to fit in all of the benchmarks the students need to finish second grade successfully. By using science centers, I can give students more time to work on hands-on science concepts and to have fun while learning.

By using the Plants and Animals tubs that come pre-filled with books and hands-on materials, my students will be able to not only master the science benchmarks, but increase their learning in preparation of future grade levels. These science stations can be used both during my lessons as well as during independent centers time. When they use the activities during centers time, I am available to work with struggling students who may need extra support. The students who are on-level will be able to follow directions and use the Science Jeopardy game to "play against each other" and feel successful when getting the answers correct.

With your help, my students will be able to spend more time learning about science concepts that are included on most standardized testing formats. The students will be able to work in small themed groups, will work to strengthen their communication skills, and will have the opportunity to work with hands-on activities instead of reading their science text for information.
