Kindergarten Survival Kit

My students need two sets of readers for their “Kindergarten Survival Kit” to take home every day and work with their parents on letter sounds and recognition, reading skills, and fluency.

I am a 2nd year Kindergarten teacher in Tennessee. The majority of the students attending the school are African-American. The students that go to the school also live within approximately a 5 – 10 mile radius of the school. Many of the students in my class come from a single parent home. My school is a Title I and Reading First school; therefore in the morning we have a 90 minute uninterrupted reading block. During this time I am required to implement reading strategies, such as reading, reading comprehension, and phonics.

I look at what i do as a career. My students are important to me because I have an interest in their welfare in and outside of the classroom. I want them to learn school does not end at Kindergarten. I want them to be well prepared for a bigger transition, 1st grade. These skills are needed and are essential to the student development of phonological awareness, alphabetic understanding, and automaticity and fluency.

It is my desire to create a “Kindergarten Survival Kit”, which will have vocabulary words, sight words, words, and books to read. The students will need these items to study to survive kindergarten and to make it to the 1st grade. I am asking for ITTY BITTY READERS VARIETY PACK 36 BOOKS - this will be used to put into the Survival Kits so that the students can read to their parents for at least five minutes each night. I am also asking for SIGHT WORDS READERS BOX SET - I will use these readers in class during my Reading Block. After reading them in class I will send them home in the Survival Kit so that the parents can review the story and the sight words learned with their children.

The “Kindergarten Survival Kits” are something that needs to be implemented within my classroom. A lot of the students did benefit from work that I send home on a daily basis, but the "Kindergarten Survival Kits" will be an added bonus that I know that both the parents and the children will enjoy!
