My students desperately need resources (books!) to support their self-discovery into who they are! They need books that reflect their sexual diversity and feelings and experiences! They need books that tell them that they are okay as they are!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school for immigrant newcomers. Newcomers are students who have been in the country 4 years or less. Many have just arrived. They vary in English language levels, as well as range in age from 13-20 years old. Our school focuses on ESL methodologies to teach students all content areas. It is an amazing community and support system for the unique experience of these students. We are in our 5th year of operation, and believe our program provides a holistic approach to learning language and transitioning to a new culture. Our administrators, as well as a handful of faculty, are immigrants themselves. Our mission is to focus on the socio-emotional, as well as the academic needs, of each student.
I advise 9-12th grade members of the Gay-Straight Alliance!
As a school for immigrants, we have always focused on the importance and necessity of diversity in the world and in our community. We have a number of clubs which provide for embracing the differences among us. However, one area we have neglected is that of sexual diversity. Given the community we serve and the strict taboos around sexuality, creating a space and movement to support sexual diversity and LGBTQ people has been slow coming.
That said, after 3 years of planning, I have just started up a GSA to address this need. We have had 13+ meetings, and are in motion! This is an exceptionally exciting time for those of us who have been waiting for this opportunity. This has already changed the landscape of how we as a school talk about and address, as well as embrace, queer politics in the classroom and in our students' lives. We truly believe that our GSA will have a tremendous impact on the greater school community. Luckily, we are backed 100% by our administration.
Students in the club are eager to create a safe space, educate themselves and others about diversity and acceptance. They want to learn and talk and get going!
But, we don't have LGBTQ-related books!
In order to support our GSA and our mission to make all students feel safe in school, we need books and novels that openly and safely address LGBTQ issues. We need students to have access to books that reflect who they are and how they feel. We need books about LGBTQ youth so that our students can feel confident in who they are! We need books that will let our students learn and educate others about LGBTQ issues. We need books about LGBTQ issues so students grow up understanding the diversity in the world. We need books about LGBTQ issues in order to reduce the ignorance, fear and confusion about LGBTQ students and people!
All students in our school participate in an independent reading program, wherein they choose books to read daily...wouldn't it be great if a student could pick up a book about a lgbtq teen? Wouldn't it have been great if we could have had that book as a youth?
You can empower LGBTQ youth and their allies to be who they are! You can make a difference in a student's life! You can be the change and inspiration we need to see in the world!
