I teach all subjects in grades 3 through 8 (approximately 55 students) in an urban area. The content of the course varies and is differentiated to the needs of students in the classroom. At least 45 percent of our students receive hot lunch in our K-8 district.

In order to be creative in our teaching and learning strategies, we sometimes need help from outside sources and donations to make things happen. I have an ambitious group of students willing to tackle new ground. In researching space, planets, galaxies and black holes we came across an exciting Google sponsored project called Lunar-X. The Lunar-X Project is essentially a challenge: send a rover to the moon with extra awards for capturing live video feeds and/or capturing historic moon landing sites. Of course, we cannot build a lunar rover and send it to the moon---or can we?

Our project is to take on the Lunar X Challenge in our own classroom. We will construct a lunar surface which will host our historic landing sites. Then, we will design and build a rover with a network camera attached, program the robot and create a web interface to control the rover over the internet (and "lunar" surface" with live video feed). The remote web controlled rover will allow visitors to visit the landing sites and their historic markers will tell visitors more about them.

Your help to make this dream a reality in my classroom will allow the enthusiasm of space from my students to extend to others. We have a great opportunity to learn about and preserve our historic moon landing sites in this project.
