Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a small rural school in a high poverty area in Northern California. The school serves farm-workers children in an almost 500 square mile district. I teach Life Science to 87 seventh graders.

The only population of Yellow-Billed Magpies in the world lives in my county. These birds are being decimated by the West Nile virus and are becoming endangered. Students do not comprehend the importance of every species in our ecosystem and do not understand the consequences of losing these beautiful, but obnoxious, birds. This county hosts 10 million migratory birds during the winter months and approximately 16 million migrate through the local rice fields and marshes. Understanding the ecology of the region and the important part that birds play in it would enhance my students' perception of their responsibility to protect the environment.

I am requesting 30 field guides to birds so that my students can participate in the Great American Bird Count and do actual data collection used by scientists worldwide. As we live on the Pacific Flyway, the students' data on bird populations could be important in determining the effects of habitat destruction and global warming for ecologists.

I want my students to understand that all the scientific answers have not been found. My students seem to think that there are no new discoveries for their generation to make. My theme in my classroom is to always ask questions and to express that science is founded on asking questions and that all the questions have not been answered!
